Kentucky State Police stated that fatal accidents have been decreasing in Kentucky recently. Some police believe the decrease in fatal accidents is because the weather has been milder so far this winter. In past years, Kentucky police noticed that when the roads were icy or snow covered, drivers got into more accidents. This could be because drivers were in a hurry and forget to slow down on dangerous roads. Thankfully, we haven’t gotten much snow in the Kentucky area yet, so dangerous roads haven’t been much of a problem.

Fatal accidents are less in 2014, but just barely
As of this Christmas Eve, there had been 632 highway deaths in 2014. In 2013, there were 628 highway deaths by Christmas Eve. By the end of 2013, the total highway deaths were 638. So, Kentucky is six away from tying last year’s highway fatal accident rate. However, there is still hope to keep this year lower than last year.
If we continue to wear our seat belts properly, pay attention to the road and drive sober, this will help keep traffic fatalities down. Another factor that has helped keep fatal accidents down is Kentucky’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. This campaign has reduced the number of alcohol and drug-impaired drivers on the road.

So far this year, our fatal accident rate is lower than last year’s, and I’d like to keep it that way. I know that New Year’s is tonight, so please have a designated driver, call a taxi to take you home or stay the night. Alcohol can be tricky. You may think you’re sober enough to drive, but the truth is, you may not be sober enough. I want everyone to have a fun New Year’s, but I want everyone to have a plan on how they are going to get home safely.
