When you drink and drive, you are exposing yourself and others to harm. It’s dangerous and could be deadly. Whether you’re alone in your car or with a passenger, always put safety first and drive sober.

Drunk driving statistics

  • Almost 13,000 people die and hundreds of thousands are injured annually in alcohol-related incidents.
  • The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. stated that there are over 1.4 million arrests for driving while intoxicated (DWI) each year and 780,000 are convicted.
  • Two-thirds of those sentenced to imprisonment are repeat offenders.
  • Alcohol-related crashes cost American taxpayers more than $100 billion.

What we can do about it

Drunk driving is a nationwide problem. It is scary, but the solution can be simple. Prevention is the easiest way to stop drunk driving accidents. Let’s help protect ourselves and others and help improve road safety. Never drink and drive, and don’t let anyone who has been drinking get behind the wheel. Instead, have someone in your group be a designated driver. You can also call a cab. That way, everyone will make it home safely. Also, remember to always wear your seat belt before starting your car’s engine.

Know your limits. Too much alcohol affects your sense of judgment. That’s when it’s extremely dangerous to drive. Please don’t drink and drive.

45-year-old driver arrested, his passenger killed in alcohol-related crash

Christopher Wilton, a 45-year-old man from Southern Indiana, was arrested Saturday, November 15, 2014 after crashing his car and killing his passenger. The vehicle ran off the road and into a ditch. It finally came to a stop on the property of Bellarmine University. The driver, Christopher Wilton, admitted to drinking a pitcher of beer and smoking marijuana before the accident happened. According to Deputy Coroner Jack Arnold, who identified the 45-year-old passenger as Christian Jenkins, Jenkins was not wearing a seat belt when the accident happened. Jenkins was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead after suffering from multiple blunt force injuries.

As a Kentucky Accident Attorney, I don’t want anyone to drink and drive. Accidents can be avoided. We just need to recognize how serious drunk driving is, and how we can prevent drink driving accidents.
